Manfredo Fest, Just Jobim, DMP SACD-05, dual-layer SACD. “Stunner! Killer!” This, amigos, is one of the finest recordings of a jazz quartet that I’ve ever heard. I don’t know what I was expecting when I put it onto the SCD-1. I am a long time fan of the music of Jobim, one of the greats of the Brazilian jazz scene, and was hoping for some good tunes. I got a lot more than I bargained for! The group of Manfredo Fest, piano; David Finck, bass; Cyro Baptista, percussion; and Steve Davis, drums, makes magic happen. Each song (e.g., “Desafinado,” “Girl From Ipanema,” “Wave”) floats in a wonderful space, with intimacy, tone and texture contributing to an experience very much like being in a night club, with good acoustics, in the front row. Bravo!
